EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a method of psychotherapy used in the treatment of many types of psychological distress.
When a disturbing event stays vivid, people may notice anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, poor concentration, a strong startle response, guilt, or fear about the future. The Center's description notes that reactions like these can follow abuse, a serious accident, the loss of a loved one through death or divorce, a life-threatening illness, or events often associated with post-traumatic stress.
Research has identified EMDR as an effective therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder. Kelly's Grief Center also offers EMDR when working with depression, anxiety disorders, separation, complicated grief, disturbing memories, stress, sexual, emotional, or physical abuse, phobias, panic attacks, performance anxiety, pain disorders, eating disorders, and addictions.
